Have you heard about our friend in Canby who inadvertently found and burst an underground city water pipe during a backyard remodeling project 😬? Or that one time my brother knocked out power to the whole neighborhood by cutting down our backyard palm tree… 🌴 Or that time our Marketing Director accidentally dropped a ceramic mug down an open floor vent while doing some grout sealing at a friend’s beach house…🤫
Of course there are some incredibly skilled craftspeople out there who do phenomenal work! For the average homeowner though, a renovation is out of their scope. While it may seem cost-effective on the front end, there can often be back-end expenses to repair or completely redo any attempted repairs.
Many times something that looks simple enough when you get started runs into unforeseen issues like plumbing, electrical, leaks, dry rot, mold, mildew or even critter damage. Ever had skunks living under your house like we did one winter? Oh the joy of seeing tiny footprints in the snow going to the vent turned ‘den’…🦨There was a whole little family under there!
DIY’ers also don’t often consider the legalities of renovation like applying for the necessary permits or adhering to the required building codes, how botched plumbing jobs can result in leaks and water damage, warranty cancellations that result from reno fails, electrical dangers that result in fire hazards, projects without sufficient structural support that result in fines and structural collapse. There’s also concern over failing to follow the proper removal procedures for hazardous materials like asbestos and leaded paint. A good faith effort to renovate can have the opposite effect of decreasing your home’s value while at the same time increasing repair costs.
If a reno is in your wheelhouse we applaud you! If not, we invite you to consider that a bit of upfront cost can really save your sanity and pocketbook in the long run.
