Dutch Split Pea Soup-A Fall Favorite

Oct 15

A cozy classic to kick off our Fall Recipe Series!

Hi! I’m Laura, the SheBuilds Marketing Director. My cute mom is from The Netherlands, or Holland, as it is often called.

Her signature dish is split pea soup! Laurel, the SheBuilds Founder, thought it would be fun to share some recipes out this fall, so here’s the first!

Grandma Brown’s Dutch Split Pea Soup

Ingredients:

1 pound (2 1/4 cups) dry green split peas

1 meaty ham bone (1 1/2 pounds)

1 1/2 cups sliced yellow onion

1 tsp salt (if you like). We skip the salt since the ham is salty enough.

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp dried marjoram

1 cup diced fresh celery (Double the veggies for a heartier soup)

1 cup diced fresh carrots (Double the veggies for a heartier soup)

Instructions:

  • Start the base: In a large pot, combine peas, ham bone, onion, and spices with 2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat. Simmer gently for about 90 minutes, stirring occasionally so the peas don’t stick to the bottom.

  • Prep the ham: Remove the ham bone, cut the meat into bite-size pieces, and return just the meat to the pot.

  • Add the veggies: Stir in the chopped carrots and celery. Continue cooking uncovered for another 30–40 minutes, or until the veggies reach your preferred level of softness. (Pro Tip: Stir frequently during this phase for a creamier texture!)

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Garbanzo beans

  • Macaroni noodles

  • Diced red or golden potatoes

Vegan or Plant-Based Option: Skip the ham and flavor with a touch of smoked paprika for that classic, savory depth.

🍞 Serving Ideas:

Top each bowl with chunky homemade croutons, toasted pumpkin seeds, or pair it with a thick slice of sourdough bread.
Perfect for cozy nights, fall gatherings, or lazy Sunday afternoons.
