Are we swimming? Nope! Here at SheBuilds Kitchens we make a splash in most every kitchen. A “back” splash that is. The term backsplash dates back to the 1950’s. Did you know that in England they are called the opposite: splashback! They became a common design component after the advent of running water. Makes sense since there was no need for backsplashes in the days of the hand water crank or outhouses.
Typically made of ceramic tile, stainless steel or glass, these durable pieces help protect kitchen and bathroom walls from water damage. They also protect from food splashes. Certain foods like tomato-based sauces can be difficult to clean from textured walls, whereas they wipe up easily from smooth, protective surfaces.
It’s too bad backsplashes don’t extend to cover ceilings…just ask our Marketing Director who ended up with a smoothie explosion well overhead recently! 😁 No worries, she’s creative! A damp towel over broom bristles gave her the necessary reach to de-pink the ceiling.
Backsplashes are functional yes, but in recent years have become a real part of the overall aesthetic and design of each space. Catch an episode of “Fixer Upper” or “The Property Brothers” (visit SheBuilds Kitchens on Facebook or Instagram to see the pic with Jonathan, Drew and Laurel-She Builds’ Founder) and you’ll know why subway tile emerged as the trendy choice for backsplashes.
This Sherwood, OR stunner got a backsplash today! Check out the precision of those lines! Master Carpenter Aaron did a beautiful job! His skill and versatility are evident.
